The Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi and DHA Islamabad-Rawalpindi (DHAI-R) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on horticulture, landscaping, and community-based green initiatives.
The agreement, signed at the university's campus on Tuesday, establishes a framework for cooperation in horticultural research, technical knowledge exchange, and the development of greener, more sustainable communities across the twin cities.
The partnership will focus on sharing expertise in horticulture, landscaping, and orchard management, while creating opportunities for students, researchers, and practitioners to work together on projects that bridge academic knowledge and practical implementation.
Under the agreement, the two institutions will jointly support the development of fruit orchards and the enhancement of landscaping in DHAI-R areas, reflecting a growing recognition of the role that urban greenery plays in improving environmental quality, public well-being, and climate resilience.
A notable feature of the collaboration is the planned organization of fruit galas within DHAI-R communities. These events are expected to showcase local fruit production, encourage community participation, and promote awareness of sustainable horticultural practices among residents.
Officials from both organizations described the MoU as an important step towards fostering environmentally responsible development while strengthening links between academia and society. They noted that the collaboration would provide valuable field-based learning opportunities for Arid University students and faculty, enabling them to apply research and innovation to real-world challenges.
The agreement also aligns with broader efforts to promote green infrastructure and sustainable landscaping practices in rapidly expanding urban areas. As cities across Pakistan confront the challenges of climate change, rising temperatures, and environmental degradation, partnerships between academic institutions and community organizations are increasingly seen as essential to developing practical, locally adapted solutions.
By combining Arid University's expertise in agricultural and horticultural sciences with DHAI-R's commitment to high-quality green spaces, the two institutions hope to create a model of collaboration that benefits both the environment and the broader community.
